Guide to Creating a Meditation and Yoga Space

by Atelier Cocon 28 Aug 2024

Congratulations! You are finally taking the leap to open your own meditation or yoga studio! You have been dreaming of this for a long time and you want it to be perfect.

Of course there is a lot to consider, from interior design and decor, to class planning, props and accessories...You want everything to reflect your vision and intention for this special place.

When it comes to interior design and props, we got you covered.

We will go over a few design tips to create the most welcoming meditation room and what to consider when choosing your meditation props.

Creating A Soothing Meditation Space

Color Palette & Textures: In interior design, colors have a big impact on how we experience the space and how it affect our nervous system. If you are into neutral and natural colors, options like oak wood floors or walnut will warm up the room in a nature inspired way. White, grege and cream are perfect tones for painting the walls as they are soothing and reflect lights gently. If you are into colors, always choose the lighter tint.

Lighting: Thought not always possible, natural indirect light is always the way to go for ANY space, so if you are building from scratch, let your meditation space be brightened by windows. It is gentle to the eyes and sublimates everything. If artificial light is your only option, choose light fixtures that projects a diffuse and dimmed light and opt for a warm light bulbs 2000 to 3000 K ( Kelvin (K) is a unit of measure for temperature).

Plants: People visit your meditation studio to experience deep relaxation and a break from their urban lives. Adding plants like spider plants or ferns will not only decorate the room but also improve air quality.

Decor Accents: Accents are the best way to add texture and depth to a zen space without going broke. Jute braided baskets, clay or stone vases, wood or metal shelves, linen curtains, wall decor, coffee table book... accents make a space alive.

Aromatherapy: Now that's one of our favorite and most underexplored asset for a pleasant meditation studio experience. Scent is the sense that can make you travel, it can be so soothing and enjoyable to step into a space that just smells good. Natural scented candles, palo santo smudging, incense burners, use all that to offer a sensoriel experience to your visitors that they will come back for.

Which Props Should You Have In Your Meditation & Yoga Studio?

Meditation Cushions: This one seems obvious, but not to everybody. Most people don't know they need meditation cushions until they use it. Can you meditate without? Of course, but sitting for a long period of time will, in most cases, lead to tingling feets or numbness. Meditation cushions are designed to improve postures, release tensions on lower back and knees by lifting the hips. They offer padding to the points of pressure like the toes, ankles and knees.

Sound Healing Futons: If you plan on having soundbaths or yoga nidra sessions, practicing on a futon will be game changer for your visitors. Indeed futons offers a comfortable support for the whole body allowing for a total relaxation.

Eye Pillows: Most favorite accessory, the eye pillow is the stairway to deep relaxation. Filled with flax seeds and lavender, this eye mask has multiple benefits:
  •  It covers the eyes from surrounding light allowing the mind to enter in a deep state of relaxation
  • The weight of the seeds applies a gentle pressure on the eyes which improves relaxation
  • In aromatherapy lavender is used to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.
You got the message, this accessory used in shavasana and soundbaths is a must have to embark your clients on a soothing sensory journey.

Yoga Bolsters: Bolsters are commonly used in Iyengar yoga , Yin and restorative yoga. If you plan on having any of theses classes in your studio, you must have this yoga prop. In a lying position, having a bolster underneath the knees will add comfort to the lower back and the knees. In restorative yoga, the bolsters allows to gently enter and maintain difficult opening or stretching positions taking the body to a the next level without risks of injuries.

Blankets: As the body relaxes during these healing sessions, temperature drops a bit, causing to feel cold. Having meditation blankets will ensure that your clients can enjoy and really indulge in the practice without feeling any discomfort especially during winter times.
