Spelt is a cereal that has been cultivated for thousands of years, similar to common wheat but with the distinctive characteristic of being “dressed”. In fact, the spelt seed is protected by a hull known as a “husk”, which requires extraction work. Associated with Mediterranean civilizations, spelt is grown in Morocco's Rif region. This cereal requires very little water, adapts to dry, mountainous soils and is generally grown organically, since it requires no fertilizers or pesticides.

We chose to stuff our meditation cushions and some of our yoga bolsters with spelt husk because, in addition to being a plant-based material, it offers exceptional advantages and virtues.

• Excellent support for the neck:

  Meditation cushions stuffed with spelt husk relax and relieve tension in the neck and thus in the trapezius and areas responsible for chronic neck pain.

  Spelt balls are small, individual particles that move freely according to the pressure applied, so they can be adjusted to maintain the most comfortable posture at the nape of the neck, or while sitting cross-legged on a meditation cushion. What's more, they can stimulate neck muscles for improved circulation.

• Hypoallergenic properties:
  Spelt balls are not associated with any allergenic characteristics; they are compatible with all skin types. Before using them, we clean them to get rid of dust and potential residues, so they are totally safe for those suffering from allergies, asthma and sinus problems. The spelt bales we use at Atelier Cocon are organically grown and therefore free from chemicals and toxins.

• Breathable stuffing:
  Spelt husk has excellent breathability characteristics, so our meditation cushions and yoga bolsters don't retain any moisture preventing troublesome micro-organisms like bacteria from growing.
